Each well in the WhiteStar database contains an API number as one of its attributes. If this number begins with a 4, then the number was assigned by the Railroad Commission. Otherwise it is a pseudo-unique number created by WhiteStar. The Railroad Commission has yet to assign numbers to these wells, which typically were drilled prior to 1977.
Well status codes are defined as follows:
AL - Abandoned Location
ALG - Abandoned Location, Permitted for Gas
ALO - Abandoned Location, Permitted for Oil
B - Both Oil and Gas Well
CT - Core Test
D - Dry Well
G - Gas Well
GS - Gas Storage Well
IW - Injection Well
IWB - Injection Well, Was Both Oil and Gas
IWG - Injection Well, was gas
IWO - Injection Well, was oil
L - Location
O - Oil Well
OS - Oil Storage Well
PB - Plugged Oil and Gas Well
PG - Plugged Gas Well
PO - Plugged Oil Well
RW - Radioactive Well
SL - Surface Location
ST - Sulfur Test Well
BW - Brine Well
WS - Water Supply
WSO - Water Supply (From Oil Well)
WSG - Water Supply (From Gas Well)
WSB - Water Supply (From well with both oil and gas)
OB - Observation Well
OBO - Observation Well (From Oil Well)
OBG - Observation Well (From Gas Well)
OBB - Observation Well (From both oil and gas)
STO - Storage Well
