Aliquot Data Entry Standards (v2.0)

Marketing WhiteStar

The following standards are used for building legal land descriptions within the PLSS referencing the underlying land grid, i.e. meridian-township-range-section.  Legals may also reference permanent government lots or tracts within the section.

Point Aliquot Description

Polygon Transaction

Point Aliquot Description

A point aliquot description represents an offset within a specified section. Many US state resource agencies record well locations using this type of description.  They are reasonably standardized compared to polygon descriptions.  WhiteStar Legal Mapper (WLM) parses the legal description and references WhiteStar Grid and WhiteStar Lots, Tracts and Quarter-Quarter products to compute a geographic coordinate representing the location of the point.

Examples

  1. KS 6 25S 21E 1 440FSL 440FEL SE - 440 feet from the south line, 440 feet from the east line of the southeast quarter of section 1, township 25 south range 21 east of the, Sixth Principal Meridian, in Kansas.
  2. KS 6 25S 21E 1 SE SE - The center of the southeast of the southeast of section 1, township 25 south range 21 east, Sixth Principal Meridian, in Kansas.
  3. KS 6 10S 16W 2 C SE NE SW - The center of the southeast of the northeast of the southwest quarter, section 2, township 10 south range 16 west of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Kansas.
  4. KS 6 25S 21E 2 330FNL 330FEL LOT 2  - 330 feet from the north line, 330 feet from the east line of lot 2 in section 2 of township 25 south range 21 east of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Kansas.
  5. KS 6 25S 21E 15 330N 330E SWc SEq - 330 feet north and 330 feet east of the southwest corner of the Southeast quarter of section 15, township 25 south range 21 east of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Kansas.

All tokens are case-insensitive, and all token formats are represented above in a regular expression-like syntax. For a description specifying only a meridian, township, range, and section, the resulting point will be located at the center of the identified section. Otherwise, the subsequent tokens identify a specific point within the section.
WLM understands a fairly comprehensive variety of descriptions. The following examples (all found in various vendor databases) are locations in Township 26S, Range 12W, Section 13 of the Sixth Principal Meridian (data courtesy of Petrobase of Western Kansas).  WLM handles just about any commonly found description, and many that are not-so-commonly found.

Polygon Transaction

A polygon aliquot description represents a polygon within the specified section. Land and mineral instruments using the Public Land Survey System always have a land legal description in a variety of formats.  WhiteStar Legal Mapper (WLM) parses a well behaved legal description and references WhiteStar Grid and WhiteStar Lots, Tracts and Quarter-Quarter products to compute a polygon representing the tract of land or a lease.

Examples

  1. KS 6 25S 21E 1 SE SE -  The southeast of the southeast quarter of section 1 township 25 south range 21 east of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Kansas.
  2. KS 6 26S 12W 13 NE/4 NE/4 NE/4 - The northeast of the northeast of the northeast quarter of section 13 of township 26 south range 12 west of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Kansas
  3. WY 6 53N 69W 15 S2 N2 N2 - The south half of the north half of the north half of section 6 township 53 north range 69 west of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Wyoming.

All tokens are case-insensitive, and all token formats are represented above in a regular expression-like syntax. For a description specifying only a meridian, township, range, and section, the resulting polygon will correspond to the entire identified section. Otherwise, the subsequent tokens identify a specific polygon within the section.  The variety of location descriptions WLM understands is fairly comprehensive. The following examples are locations in Township 27S, Range 19E, Sections 2, 3 and 4 of the Sixth Principal Meridian. WLM handles just about any commonly found description, and many that are not-so-commonly found.

Quarter and Half Equivalents

In all cases, quarters can be represented by the quarter descriptions with or without a ‘1/4’ suffix (i.e. NE1/4 is equivalent to NE). Bisections can be represented with either a ‘1/2’ or ‘2’ (i.e. N1/2 is equivalent to N2). The one in front of the division is optional (i.e. NE/4 is equivalent to NE1/4).

The following are all equivalent:
KS 6 26S 12W 12 N1/2 NE
KS 6 26S 12W 12 N1/2 NE1/4
KS 6 26S 12W 12 N2 NE
KS 6 26S 12W 12 N/2 NE/4

FME: Using the WhiteStarLegalMapper Transformer

Marketing WhiteStar

Download

Download the WhiteStarLegalMapper transformer at the FME Hub and copy the WhiteStarLegalMapper.fmx file to the transformer directory of your FME installation, for example c:\program files\fme_17\transformers.

Build the Input Data File

Your legals could come from anywhere, a database or a spreadsheet.  However in this example we use notepad to build a simple CSV file named legals.txt.  The first line contains the identifying attribute names id and legal.  Id is a unique identifier for each legal description used to merge in other data in later steps if so desired.  In the field, these IDs (lease numbers, etc) are often alphanumeric, but we will use a simple positive integer.

legals.png

FME Workbench

In your FME workspace, add a CSV Reader.  Fill out the parameters to load your input data file.

csvreader.png
csvdetails.png

Add the WhiteStarLegalMapper Transformer

Click the FME Workbench Canvas to the right of the CSV reader and key in WhiteStarLegalMapper to add the transformer.

xformer.png
  1. Supply the email address and password credentials registered with WhiteStar.
  2. For Product, choose either the WhiteStar Wellspotter (points) or WhiteStar LeaseBuilder (polygons).

  3. The Legal Land Description value should be the attribute legal.

The transformer will output the geometry and attributes to the output port or reject them (without geometry) to the Rejected port.  This will aid in troubleshooting problems with invalid legal descriptions.

Your workspace should look something like this. To preview the mapped results, attach an Inspector to the Output port.

fmw.png

Preview Mapped Results

Now click the green arrow to run the workspace.  The resulting mapped legals will be displayed in the FME Data Inspector.

mapped.png

Clicking on the table view icon, FME displays the attributes for each polygon.  Note the Id and the legal are stored with the calculated geometry.
