Aliquot Data Entry Standards (v2.0)

The following standards are used for building legal land descriptions within the PLSS referencing the underlying land grid, i.e. meridian-township-range-section.  Legals may also reference permanent government lots or tracts within the section.

Point Aliquot Description

A point aliquot description represents an offset within a specified section. Many US state resource agencies record well locations using this type of description.  They are reasonably standardized compared to polygon descriptions.  WhiteStar Legal Mapper (WLM) parses the legal description and references WhiteStar Grid and WhiteStar Lots, Tracts and Quarter-Quarter products to compute a geographic coordinate representing the location of the point.

  1. KS 6 25S 21E 1 440FSL 440FEL SE - 440 feet from the south line, 440 feet from the east line of the southeast quarter of section 1, township 25 south range 21 east of the, Sixth Principal Meridian, in Kansas.
  2. KS 6 25S 21E 1 SE SE - The center of the southeast of the southeast of section 1, township 25 south range 21 east, Sixth Principal Meridian, in Kansas.
  3. KS 6 10S 16W 2 C SE NE SW - The center of the southeast of the northeast of the southwest quarter, section 2, township 10 south range 16 west of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Kansas.
  4. KS 6 25S 21E 2 330FNL 330FEL LOT 2  - 330 feet from the north line, 330 feet from the east line of lot 2 in section 2 of township 25 south range 21 east of the Sixth Principal Meridian in Kansas.

All tokens are case-insensitive, and all token formats are represented above in a regular expression-like syntax. For a description specifying only a meridian, township, range, and section, the resulting point will be located at the center of the identified section. Otherwise, the subsequent tokens identify a specific point within the section.
WLM understands a fairly comprehensive variety of descriptions. The following examples (all found in various vendor databases) are locations in Township 26S, Range 12W, Section 13 of the Sixth Principal Meridian (data courtesy of Petrobase of Western Kansas).  WLM handles just about any commonly found description, and many that are not-so-commonly found.

Polygon Transaction

A polygon aliquot description represents a polygon within the specified section. Land and mineral instruments using the Public Land Survey System always have a land legal description in a variety of formats.  WhiteStar Legal Mapper (WLM) parses a well behaved legal description and references WhiteStar Grid and WhiteStar Lots, Tracts and Quarter-Quarter products to compute a polygon representing the tract of land or a lease.

Quarter and Half Equivalents

In all cases, quarters can be represented by the quarter descriptions with or without a ‘1/4’ suffix (i.e. NE1/4 is equivalent to NE). Bisections can be represented with either a ‘1/2’ or ‘2’ (i.e. N1/2 is equivalent to N2). The one in front of the division is optional (i.e. NE/4 is equivalent to NE1/4).
